The Gunman is a serviceable action thriller that will mostly apply to fans of the so-obviously aging Sean Penn. It's at times almost painful to watch the man fall apart as the film moves through 17%. From the director of Taken comes The Gunman, a pulse-pounding action thriller starring two-time Academy Award-winner Sean Penn. It's been eight years since Jim Terrier (Sean Penn) worked as a black ops assassin and now someone from his old organization wants him dead.
Based on the pulp novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette with the admittedly awesome title of "The Prone Gunman," "The Gunman" is, at least for the first two-thirds, rudimentary beyond belief. The action scenes are executed by director Pierre Morel with none of the grace and style that he brought to the big set-pieces in such previous efforts as. First it was a Bad Day for the Hangman, then there was Gunfight at Spanish Wells, and now there's Valley of the Gunman, and this his gunfighter is going to see many die, many live, and one legend born.. Not long after setting an explosion and robbing a gold train and inadvertently killing the crew, a cabal of otherwise law-abiding individuals discover a member of their group has loose lips.
As producer and star of The Gunman, Sean Penn runs away with himself, striking all kinds of action-man poses without ever making a strong attempts to get director Pierre Morel to do 2/5. "The Gunman" is what you'd expect: the acting is a collection of star-powered mediocrity, the action on display is surprisingly gory, but wholly unsatisfying in the sterile way it is carried out, Frédéric Thoraval's editing is all over the place, and the themes explored in the film are about as generic as the film's title.
